Want to know how to tell a story? Watch Jimmy Hogg.
In Jimmy Hogg: Mashed his story is about how he hitchhiked from Plymouth to the West Midlands to meet his girlfriend’s wealthy parents. It’s also about how desperate he was to be cool when he was 19 and how, through a combination of humiliation and happenstance, he was freed from that obsession and started shedding the poses of manliness to become an authentic man.
Butch and boisterous, Hogg is the king of rhythms and repetitions — so there’s music in his speech. He loves a good tangent: he’ll interrupt his road trip to point out that waterbird over there and go on a riff about what kind of fry it might be swallowing. And he weaves narrative threads and details in ways that are surprising, rewarding and, eventually, touching.
No wonder this show is selling out.
