Actor Emma Slipp has come into her own this season (as have Lindsey Angell and Emmelia Gordon).
Tonight and tomorrow are your last chances to see Slipp in Touchstone Theatre’s The Concessions. Thanks to poor dramaturgy, the script isn’t great— but Slipp is.
Partly that’s because, although she’s a true beauty—she reminds me of a young Elizabeth Taylor—she’s not afraid of looking ugly. In Killer Joe, she took on the role of a slutty, white-trash schemer. In The Concessions, she plays a drunk, and she does so with such raw vulnerability that you can’t help but thank her for it.
Slipp never tries to make an impression. She just stays present and responsive. That’s not an easy thing to do. But she can do it. And it makes her radiant.
